Formation of Biomimetic Porous Calcium Phosphate Coatings on Surfaces of Polyethylene/Zinc Stearate Blends

چکیده
Studies were undertaken investigating improvements to the biological interaction of polymeric implant materials through their coating with an osteoinductive calcium phosphate (CaP)-type film using biomimetic deposition technology. Past research indicates that CaP coatings on implant materials increase bone growth and remodeling rates as well as enhance the stability of the bone-implant interface. This is due to the highly biocompatible nature of CaP and its chemical similarities to natural bone mineral, which enables it to form chemical bonds with bone. Additionally, adding additives to polymers, which have the proper functionality to serve as nucleation sites for CaP coating growth, can potentially improve biocompatibility and long-term stability of implant devices. Our research efforts presented in this paper concentrated on adding zinc stearate to polyethylene. Important potential benefits of using polyethylene-stearate blends having CaP coatings include: increased surface porosity that can improve mechanical stability of the implant via enhanced osseointegration, improved rates and quality of bone-implant fusion, and enhanced soft tissue wound healing through stimulation of angiogenesis. Our results show that chemical immersion of polyethylene-zinc stearate blends in supersaturated calciumphosphate solutions elicits growth of porous CaP coatings, although at a very slow rate, ~0.1

Effect of polyethylene pretreatments on the biomimetic deposition and adhesion of calcium phosphate films.
The effect of ultraviolet irradiation and glow discharge (GD) processing of the polyethylene (PE) substrates on deposition of calcium phosphate (CaP) films from supersaturated aqueous calcium phosphate solutions was investigated in this study. CaP coatings deposited on the PE substrates were comprised of elongated clusters of spherical particles and 100% of the free surface area of nearly all o...
متن کاملA Review Paper on Biomimetic Calcium Phosphate Coatings
Biomimetic calcium phosphate coatings have been developed for bone regeneration and repair because of their biocompatibility, osteoconductivity, and easy preparation. They can be rendered osteoinductive by incorporating an osteogenic agent, such as bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2), into the crystalline lattice work in physiological situations. The biomimetic calcium phosphate coating enable...

The effect of zinc phosphate (ZP) and zinc calcium phosphate (ZCP) coatings on the reinforcing mechanisms of smooth steel fiber in cementitious matrix have been studied. The results of pull out tests illustrated that by coating smooth steel fiber the pull-out load may be increased up to 100%. The effect of zinc phosphate coating on interface bonding was more than zinc-calcium phosphate coating....

The surfaces of hydoxyapatite ceramics were modified by the precipitation of octacalcium phosphate coating from aqueous solution and the biomimetic method synthesized nanohydroxyapatite coatings. Both coatings were deposited as continuous and uniform layers. It was demonstrated that the octacalcium phosphate coating was inappropriate for in-vitro osteoblast proliferation despite of good initial...
